The historic Grimsby Fish Dock relies on a vast and complex network of lock gates to manage daily marine access. Much of this critical marine infrastructure dates back to the 1930s and requires highly specialised engineering knowledge to maintain. Operating in a harsh marine environment means that when vital machinery wears down, standard off-the-shelf replacements are simply not available. Hickman Engineering (formerly Port Equipment Engineering) was contracted for a major manufacturing project, producing bespoke components to support the ongoing operation of the dock’s lock gate infrastructure.
Sluice Gate Cross Head Assembly Manufacture
The core of this specialised project focused on the complete manufacture of a complex sluice gate cross head assembly. Sluice gates are essential for managing water flow and ensuring the safe, reliable operation of the wider lock system. Rather than facing prolonged delays waiting for external suppliers, our expert traditional machining and fabrication teams managed the entire production process in-house. By reverse-engineering the specific requirements of the historic dock infrastructure, our engineering team machined and fabricated the heavy-duty cross head assembly to exact tolerances, ensuring a flawless fit and long-term durability.

By manufacturing these vital components locally at our workshop, we significantly reduced potential downtime for the port facility.
